REAL ID Requirements Begin May 7th, 2025
News March 26, 2025
Starting May 7th, 2025, federal law requires all state IDs to adhere to certain minimum standards.
What's the law?
The federal REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to strengthen security standards in the wake of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Act requires state and territory-issued driver’s license and identification cards to include basic information about the cardholder such as their:
- full legal name;
- date of birth;
- gender;
- residential address; and
- signature.
The cards must also contain physical security features to prevent tampering and counterfeiting. States and territories are required to meet minimum standards for verifying an applicant’s information before issuing these documents.
You can read a copy of the REAL ID Act online. See Title II-Improved Security for Drivers’ Licenses and Personal Identification Cards beginning on page 81.
When is the deadline?
The enforcement date begins May 7th, 2025.
Why do I need an updated ID?
If your ID does not comply with the REAL ID standards, it will not be accepted by the federal government.
Commercial air travel is a common scenario in which people have their state ID reviewed by the federal government. The Transportation Security Agency requires an ID to go through airport security.
The Department of Homeland Security has a list of FAQs about REAL ID that goes into more detail.
How do I know if my ID is compliant?
Texas began issuing REAL ID-compliant documents in the fall of 2016. If you’ve updated your driver’s license or identification card since then, your ID likely already meets these standards!
REAL ID compliant IDs have a gold star at the top corner. You can view an example of a compliant ID on the official Texas government website.
My ID is not compliant. What should I do?
If your ID isn’t compliant, you’ll need to renew it.
In some cases, you can renew your ID online. See the driver services page to check your online renewal eligibility, read a checklist of documentation you’ll need, and find an office near you.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has more information about the new requirements. You can apply online if you’re eligible.
