This is the first volume in Edward White's planned three volume set on the role the law has played in shaping American history. This volume focuses on the legal history from the earliest European settlements until the Civil War. In his introduction, White explains the scope of the volume saying that the book is “concerned with how 'law,' in the multiple senses in which I will be using that term, was connected to themes that I am claiming helped define particular periods of American history.”
