Recording Laws
Feature February 25, 2019
The State Law Library frequently receives questions regarding recording laws and how these laws might impact an individual’s right to privacy. To assist in answering those questions, our librarians have created a research guide.
This guide includes information on:
- State laws governing telephone recordings, red light cameras, invasive photography, video surveillance, electronic monitoring, and the operation of small, unmanned aircraft (such as drones)
- Federal laws governing recorded conversations as well as laws governing the operation of drones
- “Plain English” summaries of these laws
- Online access to titles such as the Reporter's Recording Guide: A State-by-State Guide to Taping Phone Calls and In-Person Conversations
If you have any questions or would like more information about our other Legal Research Guides please don't hesitate to Ask a Librarian!
